Borra Vineyards Fusion White

Borra Vineyards: White Fusion Label

FUSION White 2013

Lodi Appellation, Proprietary White Blend
90% Viognier, 10% Gewürztraminer

We don’t make a Sauvignon Blanc, but we bet even wine connoisseurs would guess that’s what this fusion of our Rhône Viognier with a healthy dash of German Gewürztraminer is. Somehow those two varietals create distinctive flavors of lemongrass leading one to think this is from cool New Zealand, rather than Lodi. Complexifying things are tangy citrus notes of limes, some cantaloupe, wet stones and some saltiness on the finish, making you feel more like you took a bite of some delicious culinary creation, rather than a drink of wine. In fact, we happened to have a plate of crispy French fries nearby, dipped them in a smidgeon of Dijon mustard, and – wow – for almost zero cost we had a fantastic pairing. Or you could show off with Scallops a la Coquilles St. Jacques. 220 cases produced. (05/01/2014)

FUSION Red 2011

Lodi Appellation, Proprietary Red Blend
60% Syrah, 20% Petite Sirah, 17% Zinfandel, 3% Alicante Bouschet

Our favorite crowd-pleaser is a delicious, complex fusion of Lodi’s best winegrape varietals. The very cool 2011 vintage brought out a rich and creamy Haagen-Dazs strawberry flavor that nicely enhances the cherries we normally taste in this full-bodied and balanced blend. You’ll notice smooth, almost chalky tannins on the roof of your mouth moving to a lingering tartness, as if from a yoghurt, that combines with cola for a long finish. Take a whiff and deep notes of cherry, cloves, dark chocolate and forest floor will echo most of the flavors. If you’re adventurous, you’ll try a roasted duck drizzled with a beef-cherry reduction sauce, or go for an easy smoked ham. 592 cases produced. (11/09/2013)

FUSION Red 2012

Lodi Appellation, Proprietary Red Blend
60% Syrah, 20% Petite Sirah, 17% Zinfandel, 3% Alicante Bouschet

NEW RELEASE

Our favorite crowd-pleaser is a deliciously dry, complex fusion of Lodi’s best winegrape varietals. If this wine were a food, you’d swear it was a gorgeous slab of Chinese pork spare ribs, glazed and cooked to form a slightly charred, eminently delectable crust. Dip that in a sour cherry-clove, mouth-filling sauce and you’re set for the evening. Typical of fine age-worthy wines, you’ll notice smooth, almost chalky tannins on the roof of your mouth moving to a lingering tartness. And if you concentrate, you’ll also find some notes of plums, meaty black cherries, rich wood, and rose petals dancing in your nose. To quench your hunger, throw those ribs on the barbie, or make a 911 call for Chinese take out. 660 cases produced. (10/23/2014)

Borra Vineyards Crealto
Borra Vineyards Crealto label
Artist Series Crealto 2012

Lodi Appellation, Proprietary White German Sweet Dessert Wine
Rieslaner, Gewürztraminer and grapes from mystery vines

Our first dessert wine is a team effort by winemakers Markus Niggli and Mokelumne Glen’s Brett Koth. In a departure from standard white-wine winemaking, Rieslaner, Gewürztraminer and grapes from mystery vines all soak on their skins for three days before a 10-day cold fermentation, resulting in loads of peaches and pears in this straw-colored, concentrated, syrup-like nectar. The low 11.4% alcohol makes this mouth-enveloping blend very easy to drink, and what comes across as some fig and a gentle squeeze of orange juice rounds out the complexity and keeps the wine balanced, not cloyingly sweet. Don’t miss inhaling delicate aromas of honeyed yellow peaches with lingering orange blossom and vineyard dust. If you’re hungry, go for a chunk of smoked salmon with capers for a surprisingly super wine interplay. 60 cases produced. (11/05/2013)

Borra Vineyards Kerner

Borra Vineyards Kerner label

Artist Series Kerner-Based Blend 2013

Lodi Appellation, Proprietary White German Varietal Blend
50% Kerner, 25% Riesling, 25% Bacchus

“Borra now produces the most ‘contemporary’ style wines grown in Lodi today, period.” – Randy Caparoso in his blog

Our winemaker, Markus Niggli, nicknamed this Kerner-based blend “Vinho Verde” after the popular Portuguese style of bottling wine so quickly after crush that not all the natural carbonation has dissipated. This is a no-holds-barred intense shot of pure lime and gorgeous kiwi fruit layered in minerality that is incredibly refreshing. And that carbonation brings a sizzling spritziness that will make your mouth water for Fettuccine Alfredo with Shrimp, Chicken Cordon Bleu, or a decadent Triple Cream Cheese. The lively limes will keep dancing on your tongue for the better part of an hour – no kidding! (Steve Borra calls it “Zipcode” because the label secretly contains the postal code for Markus’s hometown in Switzerland.) 42 cases produced. (03/08/2014)

Artist Series Nuvola 2013

Lodi Appellation
100% Gewürztraminer

Gewürztraminer in the U.S. has had a reputation for being cloyingly sweet. So you’ll be pleasantly surprised by winemaker Markus Niggli’s dry take on this German classic, and even more surprised to learn that this is 100% pure warm-climate Lodi fruit. Taking you right to the cutting edge of what’s being poured in the hottest restaurants, Nuvola – Italian for “cloud” – serves up signature flavors of lychee, but with a healthy lemon twist bringing an exciting liveliness, accompanied by delicate honeysuckle and the skin of green apple on top of refreshing salty minerality. For an incredible pairing, we’d ask for a big bowl of creamy Butternut Squash soup topped with whisps of toasted onions and a dollop of crème fraiche. 71 cases produced. (03/09/2014)

Borra Vineyards Riesling

Artist Series Riesling 2012

Lodi Appellation

For those who like a touch of sweetness, our new Riesling offers just the right amount. There is a soft delicacy to the scent – perhaps juicy peach with lime and apple blossoms. What blows us away about this wine is the zingy super long finish of lime and orange that follows unctuous honeysuckle, white peach, oils of citrus and who knows what else. But watch out, you’ll have emptied the half bottle before you figure it all out! 60 cases produced. (4/24/13)

Borra Vineyards Intuition

Borra Vineyards Intuition label

Intuition Field Blend White 2012

Lodi Appellation, Proprietary White German Varietal Blend
60% Kerner, 20% Riesling, 20% Gewürztraminer

The last 2011 vintage was described as, “This is a great wine, one of the best California white wines I’ve tasted this year. It’s delicious. And complex. And constantly interesting. Every sip was worth savoring. And it was even more delicious the second day.” – W. Blake Gray, The Gray Report

Boldly turning the pre-conceived notion about Lodi on its head, our winemaker’s personal experiment has proven to be a racy, refreshing success. A beguiling arrangement of honeyed vanilla peach custard scents with traces of white pepper and lemonness turn vivid and alive with a sip, revealing lemons, limes and peaches concentrating into a finish of intense juicy pineapple and oil of orange zest. All of these work together in excellent dry harmonic balance to please even the most demanding chef. We’ve got a white to marry with all those spicy foods that normally vanquish the best cellar selections. Spice up a simple baked potato, or go for shrimp spring rolls dipped in spicy peanut sauce – anything spicy and Asian. 200 cases produced. (07/16/13)

Chardonnay Limited Release 2012

Gill Creek Ranch, Clements Hills, Lodi

With this limited release Chardonnay from our Gill Creek Ranch vineyard we pay tribute to owner Steve Borra’s decades of work in our fields. An additional goal was filling Steve’s personal cellar with his favorite classic California style of Chardonnay. Barrel fermentation and sur lie stirring in 100% new American oak barrels develop a silky smooth and creamy viscous texture that you don’t find in most dry white wines. On the nose, you’ll discover buttery vanilla oak, yellow peach and perhaps some geranium. Honeyed vanilla over yellow peaches may come to mind on tasting, with a suggestion of banana peel, finishing up with subtle equal parts of orange and straw. There’s a new foodie fad of roasting the skin of a chicken until crispy, which would be a killer pairing, or – simpler yet – accompanying a heaping bowl of hot buttered popcorn on movie night. 74 cases produced. Borra Vineyards Heritage

Borra Vineyards Heritage label

Heritage Field Blend Red 2011

Lodi Appellation, Proprietary Blend
36% Barbera, 32% Carignane, 30% Petite Sirah, 2% Zinfandel

Generations of winegrape farmers used to grow a mix of interspersed grape varieties in a field of vines then crush them all together on the same day, creating a “field blend” of beautiful garnet red. The result, as with only the best wines we’ve tasted, is almost indescribable. Deep and wild fragrances of rich juicy plums and black cherries shift untamed in a tapestry of smoky bacon and cola with perhaps some leather or earth. Luscious black cherries and the concentrated essence of brambly blackberries deliver a lively tartness as you’d find near the pit of a plum. These flavors dance in an exciting enticing balance for minutes before resolving into cedar and violets. Very versatile with foods, especially great with rosemary roasted lamb, duck or virtually any beef topped with a reduction sauce. In many ways, our Heritage is itself a sauce in a glass. 180 cases produced. (07/17/2013)

Old Vine Barbera 2012

Home Ranch Carrú Vineyard, Estate Bottled

NEW RELEASE

From Steve Borra’s original vines planted around the Lodi tasting room that haven’t been bottled for several years, this coquettish wine returns to the soul of our winery. This 100% Barbera is more medium-bodied than heavy, and surprisingly “white,” with dead-on flavors of blood orange and a meatiness on the finish, along with perhaps a smidgeon of the bordering Eucalyptus grove that used to be up-wind of the vines. Taste again and you may also detect sour plums and cherries. Heck, you could find all kinds of things in here. If you only have time for a whiff, you’ll still experience the very vineyard dirt that gave it life, with a handful of plum and a pinch of five-spice thrown in. Try this with a tomato-based ground lamb stew atop flat ribbons of pappardelle pasta. 285 cases produced. (10/24/2014)

NEW RELEASE

Mostly from the sweet spot of our Gill Creek Ranch Vineyard we reserved a few special barrels that were more intensely concentrated than all the others. We’re talkin’ rich, thick and dense tannins that coat your mouth with an amazing chalky dustiness like you rarely experience, and normally found only in those hundred-dollar Cabs. But this is a balanced bigness with a tartness that makes you pour another glass (and another) filled with coffee, blackberried orange peel (is there such a thing?) and maybe some blueberries with a dash of salt. Here’s your prescription: put some nice grill marks on a steak and some Intenso in your glass, then finish off with a flourless chocolate torte glazed with blueberries and orange rinds and Facebook us in the morning. Oh, and take a moment with your glass to breathe in that steak you should be grilling along with those leaves you crunch when walking through the forest, plums you picked and steely pomegranate seeds you slaved to free. 118 cases produced. Borra Vineyards Syrah

Borra Vineyards Syrah

47.5° Syrah 2010

Gill Creek Ranch, Estate Bottled

This 100% pure Syrah is the perfect expression of our Gill Creek Ranch vineyard, oriented at 47.5˚ from north for optimal, even ripening. Smoked bacon turns to black peppery plum and fig, accompanied by cocoa and jammy cherry, telegraphing the complex enormity of this wine. Smooth, chewy big tannins can barely restrain expressive black cherry cola and espresso flavors, picking up perhaps an added bit of minty minerality and anise spice as the excitement never stops building. Steve could be found guzzling this along with his favorite Lockeford Italian Sausage. Definitely one of Lodi’s biggest Syrahs. 110 cases produced. Limit 6 bottles per person. (01/21/2013)

47.5° Red Wine 2011

Lodi Appellation, Proprietary Red Blend
80% Petite Sirah, 10% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre

The decade’s coolest 2011 vintage has shaped our Petite Sirah, Syrah and Mourvèdre into what is likely to be our most balanced and elegant blend of these varietals to date. In an attempt to descript the unique aromas, we’ll make up a name: Crème de la Black Cherry – which might translate into creamy cherries intermingling with rhubarb, earth, bacon and tarry molasses. You’ll be tasting those tart cherries clearly upon a generous sip, once they emerge from a banquet of beefy braised mushrooms, coffee and our signature black licorice. All play together in a concentrated complex balance that shows almost none of the alcohol “spiciness” than in more ripe vintages. As for food, throw a fast meaty-thick naked New York steak on the grill, or go for a longer braised short ribs with lots of mushrooms. 115 cases produced. Limit 6 bottles per person. (07/28/2013)

Markus Wine Co.
A subventure of Borra Vineyards

Markus Nimmo 2013

Lodi Appellation

This first offering from Markus Wine Co. will refresh you and challenge you at the same time. There’s a living vibrancy here that results from pure, fresh fruit energized by dynamically-balanced acidity that will keep this youngster aging gracefully for years. You’ll taste notes of honeysuckle, lime and Gewürz-supplied lychee, focusing-in on very persistent zesty oil of lemon peel. Underlying is an almost chalky texture that coats the mouth, probably from interplay of new oak and natural acidity, lending body. Just about any food will pair well, but we’d go for a decadent Bacon-Wrapped Chicken Cordon Bleu bathing in cream sauce or a cheese triple crème, but promise not to waste this precious wine as a mere cooking ingredient. 200 cases produced. Borra Vineyards Chardonnay

Borra Vineyards Chardonnay

Chardonnay 2012

Gill Creek Ranch, Clements Hills, Lodi Appellation

With our estate-grown Chardonnay, we’re not after the classic big and buttery California style, but rather more of a Burgundian influence. We achieve that goal by picking when the grapes aren’t hyper-ripe, resulting in aromas more toward the golden apple side of the spectrum, accompanied by a yeastiness and honeyed vanilla that come from traditional stirring of the lees in barrel every 10 days. A sip brings more somewhat weighty, savory golden apple with a pinch of salt and banana on the lingering finish that turns to slightly spicy honeyed lemon. For you wine geeks, there is mouthwatering acidity that comes off as smooth and creamy and very intriguing. Fettuccine Alfredo would work well, or think outside the box and pour a glass mid-morning with Eggs Benedict. 250 cases produced. (07/25/2013)

Generations of winegrape farmers used to grow a mix of interspersed grape varieties in a field of vines then crush them all together on the same day, creating a “field blend” of beautiful garnet red. This band of grapes turns in a performance that is very lively, nimble – not heavy – and certainly not wimpy, with shifting bright fruit aromas of red currant, pomegranate, sarsaparilla, and a potpourri of jasmine, lavender, and roses, riding an intriguing muskiness. Dusty tannins support focused fruit flavors combining with good acidity to build perfect sweet-tartness. A touch of cedar and a nice creamy mocha Tiramisu sing on the finale. Borra Vineyards Petite Sirah

Petite Sirah 2011

Clements Hills, Lodi Appellation (Lodi Rules)

Petite Sirah is sort of Lodi’s Pinot Noir – a notoriously challenging grape to grow. In years when this late-ripening grape comes in before the first October rains, you can get an amazing combination of European high-quality structure with exquisite fruit. Such was the cool 2011 vintage, producing interwoven aromas of beef broth and bacon with jammy Boysenberry and vanilla bean. There is an elegance to this normally in-your-face, brawny wine, that tastes like luscious rich black cherries and semi-sweet chocolate, balanced by a slight tartness from blackberries and later by anisette spice. The classic pairing would be tender braised beef short ribs, but if you’re daring, try beef enchiladas in a traditional brown tomatillo sauce. 192 cases produced. (11/10/2013)
